I received my phone call early the next morning. My friend, and client, had awakened at two thirty the night before and found the house quickly filling with water. A toilet connection had burst and for hours, while they slept, the house became a sloppy mess.

The damages may exceed $40,000, considering they had installed expensive flooring in several rooms, nearly every floor was damaged except the master bedroom, walls needed to be cut open to allow for drying, and a restoration company who specializes in these types of job was needed.

Certainly this type of claim is covered, as sudden and accidental claims are under most home policies. When my friend purchased home insurance he was only concerned about fire damage, and as a result he carried a rather large deductible - $10,000. He never thought a pipe bursting could cause such damage.

As advice to others, you may want to upgrade the hose that goes from your wall to the connection on either a sink or toilet. When I moved into my home five years ago every connection was made with a type of bendable metal. Those types eventually wear and break. The new hoses are very durable. I replaced every single hose shortly after moving in.

If you have older hoses connecting your toilets, sink and washing machine, take the time to upgrade. You may be glad you did. My friend had been out of state the prior weekend. They were also in Hawaii a few months earlier and planning another out of state trip during the summer. If this pipe had burst during those trips while they were gone for days, the damage would have been far worse. As it is, he escaped with only $40,000 or so damaged.
